All professions do very well in PvP. It's just a matter of adapting your skills to suit the battles you're going to be getting into - and as stated earlier in this thread, getting all the chapters will give you a lot more options in terms of the skills you'll have available. Each chapter will only give you access to a small set of skills that are common to all chapters (core skills), and whatever other skills that are specific to that chapter (for example, if you only buy Factions then you won't have access to Prophecies-specific skills or Nightfall-specific skills). Going with one chapter only will limit your skill choice somewhat, but it is still possible to make a really good build for any profession, even if you only have one chapter.
Also, what I would do is create a PvE character as well as a PvP character. PvE is great for testing out different builds, and whenever a PvE character learns a new skill the same skill becomes unlocked for your PvP characters to use so you can transfer a PvE biuld over to PvP easily, and be forearmed with knowledge of how the build works and what situations it works better in. |

PvE is the best way to start, youll gain a huge amount of experiance with out having been yelled at for being new to the game.
Unlocking skills is faster and easier in pve and that helps to build a good pvp char. As for what kind of char to make for pvp, a monk will get you into teams fast and easy but they are lots of work and get blamed for any mistakes they make. A war is easy but can be ineffective without the right skills. Mesmers and Eles have great builds, that means there in demand and usualy killed first in most pvp matches. I would sugest a Necromancer would be a great place to start pvp with. They have good skill balance, self healing, nice offence, tend to attract less attention on the battle field and are not that complicated to learn. In the end you'll probable try everything untill you find a proffesion and play style that keeps you having fun. |

Two words: Tainted Necro. It's all core skills. You can own just one chapter and play a reasonable tainted necro.

The general consensus is that there's no best class. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses, all can be played well enough to "pwn", and in the end it's about the player's skill and not the profession.
That said, I believe monk is the profession that can make the most difference on a team, provided that the team doesn't already have all the monks they need. That and the fact that they're usually in great demand makes it the class that you might be most likely to feel a sense of success with. Every PvP team build (save for a select few like the all-melee IWAY build or pure ele-spike teams) has a couple of monks. Quote:

A tainted necro uses death magic (usually at 16) in order to maintain the elite "Tainted Flesh" on his allies.
Other skills usually run with death magic are: 1. Rotting Flesh 2. Putrid Explosion 3. Well of Profane 4. Well of Suffering 5. Necrotic Traversal 6. Consumer Corpse (probably not all these skills at once though) Secondaries can usually include: 1. An elementalist with wards (or old IWAY used to run it with Maelstrom or Meteor shower along with gale and/or the speed boost skill from air magic (can't think of it at the moment)) 2. Monk secodary allows for extra healing or protection spells. Additionally, I would recommend a weapon with a +20% enchantment mod to it. GL HF |
